9 Habits of a Highly Effective Leader

In December, I don't want to look back at my year and see that I am still relatively the same person. I want to grow in so many different ways. I don't want to see myself doing the same ole things, working in the same ole way, and going home with the same knowledge I possess now.

I want to start now in forming the better me. I want to begin my year by instilling habits that flow through my life for 2013 and even in the years to come.

In 1989 Stephen Covey wrote The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Around Adventures, this book is extremely popular as a handbook for how to continue to grow and be effective in a professional atmosphere. I read Seven Habits when I first started at Adventures an was quite amazed at the pure simplicity of the ideas.

It really is a simple thing to improve yourself through habits. The habits themselves are usually basic ideas that when you read them, you say to yourself, "duh."

The trick is working out a balance as you develop yourself. You don't want to overstress your daily life as you strive for improvement through habits; keep your life in a healthy balance.

During one of our ELP meetings, we compiled a list of habits that we, individually, wanted to instill in ourselves throughout 2013. Many of these you will read and think of how simple and obvious the habits may be; the trick is working on making them habits in your life.

Maybe some of these are things you already do, maybe some you never thought of. But, if you want to continue to grow into a better you, then I would encourage you to first ready Covey's Seven Habits, then start to build off of that. Maybe in 2013, you too would like to continue to grow into a more highly effective leader.

1) Find a Good Rhythm

      2) Have a Clear Vision and Purpose Laid Out
            3) Seek to Help Others
                  4) Strive for Excellence
                        5) Be Present
                              6) Push Yourself to do More
                                    7) Learn and Grow
                                          8) Believe the Impossible
                                                9) Always Seek to be Educating Yourself

These are 9 habits that we in the ELP have laid out for ourselves. I would encourage you to derive a list for yourself, and in 2013, stick to them. It is important to always be seeking ways to improve ourselves personally and professionally.
